Peartree House Bed and Breakfast in Aberdour, Fife

Perhaps the most important thing for any tourist to note is that when travelling in Scotland and the UK in general booking ahead some weeks in advance can save considerable time and money, particularly if the plan is to travel long distances. Travelling to Edinburgh or Glasgow from London by train takes easily 5 - 6 hours; most of the big airlines and "no frills" carriers can do it much faster and, if booked far enough ahead, can cost significantly less. Short distance train travel is not mormally subject to such savings.

Flying to Scotland has never been easier and there are a lot of options from a growing number of airports through the UK, so many that its difficult to keep track of them all. Big operators using Scottish airports include British Airways, British Midland, Lufthansa, KLM, CSA, (Czech airlines) Air France, Aer Lingus, Icelandair, Air Canada, American Airlines, Continental. Note that these "big" operators often do great book ahead return deals to compete with the "no frills" operators.

If you travel by train in the UK it will be on one of the 25 train operating companies, and booking tickets can either be through a central booking system such as www.thetrainonline.co.uk or by contacting other operating companies directly. For Scotland the main operating companies are GNER and Virgin trains, where tickets can be booked directly. In Scotland the operating company is Scotrail who also operate the Sleeper services which serve Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Fort William and principle stations in between. Great sleeper deals can be obtained if booked long enough in advance, great value for two nights accomodation and travel!! Note also that there are "Rover" tickets available that allow travel anywhere for a period of time.

From continental Europe there is only one route that directly arrives in Scotland, the Fast Ferries link from Zeebrugge to Rosyth, and the great news is that the terminal in Rosyth is only 10 kms away from Peartree House! Other ways are using the DFDS ferry routes to Newcastle. From N. Ireland there are three operators, Stena, Seacat and P&O, all operating fast ferry links to N. Ireland, with Stena and P&O operating from near Stranraer, P&O and Seacat also operating from Troon. Northlink Ferries operate the ferries to the Northern Isles, while Scotlands own ferry system, Caledonian McBrayne run almost all of the inter island links on the west coast.

Principle operators throughout Scotland are listed below. Citylink and National Express operate a number of services along the major trunk routes in Scotland as well as links throughout the UK. Stagecoach is another major player in the country as well, and as this huge company is based in Perth its hardly surprising that it operates a significnat number of local sercies as well. In Strathclyde, the SPT executive handles a lot of transport, and in Edinburgh the comapny is run locally. Great deals are available if you are not in a hurry, though for long distance travel flying will often work out cheaper. We have also included the National Public transportation link logo to the lists.

Listed below are some great information sites, and the information they list is truly amazing. We have included here the Historic Monuments Scottish National Trust and the official Scottish Tourist Board sites, and also severl other directories which are absolutely stacked with information, useful and otherwise. We are always looking for better links, so if you can recommend any then we will add them to this page.

A small selection from Fife region and Aberdour, and includes the Kingdom of Fife tourist board site, information on the Fife Coastal Footpath and the great marked cycle routes throughout the region. Of course, no reference information on the area could ignore St. Andrews and the Royal and Ancient Golf club, and both websites (with moveable webcams) are included. Finally, there are some sites just specific to Aberdour, including the info on the Aberdour Festival, which takes place each year in early August.
